At Victor® Torch, we have a long and proud history of being the leading manufacturer of superior quality gas apparatus and welding supplies. For over 100 years, we have been committed to providing reliable, safe and innovative oxy-fuel cutting and welding equipment to professionals across a wide range of industries.
Our History

The Victor® story began in 1909, when Swedish immigrant Carl O. Holmberg founded the Victor Welding Equipment Company in Chicago, Illinois. As an inventor and entrepreneur, Holmberg recognized the growing need for quality welding and cutting equipment in America’s rapidly industrializing economy. He put his metallurgy background to work, filing patents on several innovative torch and regulator designs.
The fledgling company quickly earned a reputation for manufacturing rugged, reliable products. By 1914, the product line had expanded to include complete oxyacetylene welding and cutting outfits. As demand grew, a larger factory was established in Chicago to increase production capacity.
Victor’s torches, cutting machines and regulators were widely adopted by shipbuilders, railroads, auto manufacturers and other industries. Victor played a vital role supporting the war effort during World Wars I and II by supplying cutting and welding equipment to build ships, tanks, planes and other military necessities.
In 1962, Holmberg sold Victor to Thermadyne Industries, but the Victor brand name and dedication to excellence continued under new ownership. Through the decades, Victor has continued to launch new products that capture significant market share, including:
- 1960s – Victor introduces the patented built-in check valve for torch handles, eliminating the need for tip cleaners. The VTR regulator is launched.
- 1970s – Programmable shape cutting machines are added to the product lineup.
- 1980s – Victor leads the development of high-quality, all-position cutting torches.
- 1990s – More regulators and torches with built-in flashback arrestors are introduced, enhancing jobsite safety.
- 2000s – Victor celebrates 100 years in business as a leading manufacturer of gas apparatus. New technologies include ergonomic torch handle designs.
Today, Victor maintains its leadership position in the global market for gas welding and cutting equipment. We operate the largest combined manufacturing facilities and distribution networks for gas apparatus in the Americas.
